The Bigger The Anxiety, The Bigger The Capacity To Be Amazing.

The bigger our anxiety, the bigger our capacity to be amazing.

I remember the first time I heard this quote and realised how empowering it was.

Having taught public speaking classes for over two years now, I have witnessed this over and over again in our students; the most anxious people have the biggest capacity to be amazing...

Why? Well, because anxious people are more emotionally sensitive than others. And whilst this can be very overwhelming for them at times, what comes with that sensitivity is the ability to feel, think and view the world in a truly unique way. Every great artist, poet or musician throughout history wouldn't be able to create without being emotionally sensitive.

Communication has the power to be just as creative as music or art. We can use our words to take people on a journey, we can use our language to paint pictures in people's minds, we can show our emotions and make others feel them too.

Anxious people are the best at doing this because they have so much to draw from; a rich tapestry of light and dark, of sadness and joy, of humour and humility. Not only does it mean they can sit down and write truly inspiring speeches, but their raw vulnerability means they can deliver them with a powerful impact that is far more compelling than watching a seasoned professional deliver rehearsed lines.

When we realise this, we can stop viewing anxiety as a "weakness" that needs to be eliminated and start viewing it as a superpower to be used as creative fuel - the bigger our anxiety, the bigger our capacity to be amazing.
